The value of Psychotherapy

The value of Psychotherapy : I may be biased since this is my profession, but I can admit this first hand as a client as well. Committing to Psychotherapy has tremendous value, yet we as a culture place so much more value on our external appearance than we do internally. instead spending thousands of dollars on preventing natural aging, staying young and youthful looking, anything to look and feel good on the outside. It is great to invest and feel good about yourself. However, we have failed to realize how much more important it is to cultivate our inner beauty and self worth. Toxic Pop culture sends us very clear messages about the many things we can do to improve our lives , which have very little to do with fostering inner growth. Where we invest our time, finances, and energy is a reflection of what we value. I often hear people complaining about their difficulty finding joy in their work, struggling to find a meaningful relationships, unable to live more peacefully due to anxiety and depression, the list goes on. No matter how much you focus on your outer appearance its not going to heal you from anxiety, help you get more in touch with your emotions, improve your relational self awareness, heal childhood abuse, Trauma, etc. Allowing someone who can objectively sit with you in your pain without an agenda or a need to “fix” you is what leads to true growth and transformation internally. We need to be seen authentically in order to show up fully in relationships with others. We need to gain new tools in order to navigate past wounds, or deep rooted trauma. The investment of psychotherapy can lead to a more authentic, meaningful, balanced, and peaceful life. “Life as a therapist is a life of service in which we daily transcend our personal wishes and turn our gaze toward the needs and growth of the other. We take pleasure not only in the growth of our patient but also in the ripple effect—the salutary influence our patients have upon those whom they touch in life.” ― Irvin D.
